The National Association of Administrative Law Judiciary (NAALJ) will convene the Crescent City Conference on Administrative Justice in the heart of New Orleans bringing together Administrative Law Judges and practitioners from across the nation for a dynamic exploration of modern governance, ethics, and public service. Guided by the theme “Modern Justice with a New Orleans Spirit,” the conference will feature presentations on emerging legal issues, discussions touching on military and service related matters, and the opportunity to attend the historic Red Mass at St. Louis Cathedral. Set against the rich cultural backdrop of the Crescent City, this year’s gathering promises meaningful dialogue, professional growth, and a celebration of the traditions that shape our work in administrative justice.

NAALJ is pleased to announce that Judge Scott Schlegel of the Louisiana Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal will present at the 2026 Annual Conference in New Orleans. Judge Schlegel is nationally recognized for his leadership in judicial innovation and the integration of emerging technologies — including AI — into courtroom practice. His work has been highlighted across the country as a model for modern, efficient, and accessible justice systems.

Red Mass (Monday, October 5th 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. with optional reception at Bourbon Orleans to follow)

NAALJ attendees have been invited to participate in the Red Mass.

Location: St. Louis Cathedral, Jackson Square, New Orleans.
Significance: Sponsored by the Louisiana Catholic Bishops and the St. Thomas More Catholic Lawyers Association to invoke the Holy Spirit upon the legal profession.
Details: The event typically includes a procession of judges and lawyers. Courtroom attire.
Please indicate on your registration if you are likely to attend this event. There is no fee to participate.

All are welcome. The administrative law judges will line up behind the Louisiana judges and process in behind them. The mass is offered for the entire legal community. Our practice is that the Old Testament reading is done by a Jewish member of the bench or bar. The New Testament reading is done by a Christian, non-Catholic, member of the bench or bar. The gospel is read by a member of the bar who is also a Catholic Deacon. We typically have a guest homilist. This year our own Archbishop James Checchio will be the guest homilist as this is his first year as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. The music will be provided by the Cathedral’s beautiful choir.
Both the Red Mass and the reception are fully funded by St. Thomas More Catholic Lawyers. No public funds are expended.
